How We Met

Fall 2015

Although we both lived in Sugar Land, Texas and grew up only 15 minutes apart, we didn't meet until our 3rd year of college in nursing school. Justin swears he saw me on the first day of orientation. Honestly, I doubt if he was even there that day. For most of that first semester, we never spoke because we sat at opposite ends of the lecture hall - myself in the front and, I assume, Justin somewhere in the back. We met when our instructor organized us into small groups of 10 for our hospital rotations. Even then, we didn't really talk. Until one random evening in November, I received a Facebook message request from some guy asking me if I was going to class the next day which, of course, I was. I recognized the name as "Justin Shum" - that tall guy in my clinical group who brought a big tupper-ware of rice (and ooo did I smell Chinese BBQ?) to lunch the other day. He asked if I could sign into class for him and, like the nice person that I was, I obliged. Never thought that I'd meet my future husband by agreeing to forge his attendance in class. Yet, here we are. Partners in crime. - Jasmine

The Proposal

December 1, 2020

It was during our "Tiny Towns of Texas Trip" in December 2020 that I proposed to Jasmine. This vacation was a celebration of 5 long years of dating, learning about one another, and growing together. We started the day in Fredericksburg, Texas hiking up Enchanted Rock (little did Jasmine know, she would be getting her own enchanted rock later) and ended up in the small town of Glen Rose, Texas about an hour away from Dallas. With a watchful eye on time, I had to make sure we were at our Airbnb right at sunset in order to execute my carefully crafted plan because if you know anything about Jasmine, timeliness can be a foreign language to her. As we walked into our treehouse cabin, I convinced her to take my new drone (yes! I bought it just for this occasion) for a test run. Little did she know that the drone would be on autopilot and capturing the entire moment. As the drone took off, I got down on one knee and pulled out the ring that I had been hiding from her the entire trip. My knee was getting tired as I was waiting for her to see me, but when she did, a big sigh of relief and joy came over me as I could tell she was also overcome with emotion and said that 3-letter word “Yes!” The rest is history as they say, and now we are about to embark on the rest of our lives with our friends and family by our side. - Justin
