Our Story

"I could love him."

Maddie had been teaching in Tucson, AZ for three years when she came home to visit for the summer of 2016. She had already decided she was going to teach in Arizona for one more year. A few months prior, she had mentioned to her friend, Alyssa (bridesmaid), that she thought Justin White was cute. Justin and Maddie ran in the same friendship group but never officially met or spoke until July 2016. Alyssa began pushing Justin to reach out to Maddie because "he just needs someone to love him." Maddie remembers thinking, "I could love him." July 10th was her last day in Michigan before she was heading back to the desert. The evening of July 9th, Justin messaged Maddie on Facebook. He asked her if she wanted to go for a drive and they ended up at the Little Paw Paw Lake Access. The two talked until dawn and learned they grew up a mile from each other, rode the same bus when they were young, and had many similar interests. The next day, Maddie went back to Arizona but they continued to communicate consistently. Maddie came home to visit several times over the next 10 months. On March 17th, 2017 Justin and Maddie were celebrating St. Patrick's day with friends. Justin "asked" Maddie to be his girlfriend. By "asked" we mean "told" because he said, "you know you're my girlfriend, right?" In May of 2017, Maddie moved back to Michigan and they were no longer a long distance relationship. It took another year before these two stubborn love birds finally said "I love you." In May 2018, Maddie bought her parent's house in Mattawan. Justin and Fisher moved in August 2018. On December 24th, 2019, Justin tricked Maddie into going to the Little Paw Lake Access. He got down on one knee in the muddy driveway and proposed to Maddie in the same place where it all began. Between sobs, Maddie said "yes."
