It all started on a spooky Halloween weekend. Karissa was new to Albuquerque and her brother Ty came to see her for her birthday. Because she didn’t have anything planned for her birthday he invited her to, his friend, John’s birthday party. John was wearing an inflatable dinosaur costume and Karissa was dressed as Aphrodite...not your typical fairytale couple. The following weekend Karissa finally got up the courage to ask him out on a date to Doctor Strange.

They dated for three months steadily before Karissa asked him if he’d be interested in meeting her daughter. So the end of January 2017 John met the second love of his life. She was at that time obsessed with Batman and when he showed up at their house to meet her she came out fully dressed as Batman with mask, cape, and all. She showed John how the cape would fly up behind her when she jumped off the couch just like her favorite part of the movie. KJ was going through a shy stage at that point and Karissa was extremely impressed with how quickly KJ warmed up to John. She instantly wanted to show him all her toys and how they worked just like he had been her best friend her whole life. He got up to leave and the three year old Batman ran in front of him looking up at him. She said indignantly “you can’t leave yet!” He looked down and said, “but I have to go home.” “But I don’t know where you live,” she responded intently. He smiled at the two-foot-tall Batman interrogating him, “I don’t think I want Batman to know where I live.” Shock and horror filled her tiny face as if she was looking at a poor shell of a human and responded with the deepest concern as if trying to convince him not to jump off a cliff, “but Batman is AMAZING!” “Well you’re not wrong,” he conceded.

After almost two years of dating with the ups and downs and all the in between of relationships John was ready to propose. Karissa mentioned she would love it if he proposed while they were in Denver on a trip they’d been planning for months. She said she wanted to tell everyone in person but she wanted to tell the twins (Katie and Courtie) first. John took her ring shopping but lead her to believe it would still be months before he could afford the ring. They headed to Denver and Karissa sadly told the twins there was no way John was proposing at least least another month. However they stuck to there plans of having a date night the first night in Denver. John took her to a “fancy” dinner at her request. They then walked around a park with a pond right after the sun disappeared behind the mountains leaving a pink hue in the sky. They looked at the beautiful twilight until Karissa turned to leave John said “we can leave but first...” Karissa spun already knowing what was about to happen and happy tears started to fill her eyes. “How much do you love me?” “A little less than Superman (whom she dislikes greatly and her and John have fought over who is better Wonder Woman or Superman since the beginning of there relationship),” she replied. “So I guess I shouldn’t get down on one knee?” “Maybe just for fun.” Once on his knee he remarks, “sorry just had to tie my shoe.” After pretending to tie his shoe he reached for the ring. His pant however were to tight making him have to stand to retrieve it before returning to the moment. “Honey” he began “you are smart, beautiful, and an amazing mother. I want to spend the rest of my life with you will you marry me?” “Yes!” He places the ring on her finger and she hugged him and said, “I guess I like you a little more than Superman.” “I know” he said. They walked back hand in hand excited and ready for a future together. Until the sprinklers turned on and John ran away from her as fast as he could to safety 🤣
