Sternberg–McDonald House
547 West 6th Street, Erie, Pennsylvania.
Built in 1888 by Jerome L. Sternberg, Cashier and later Vice President of the First National Bank of Erie, the house was home to Sternberg, his wife Jessie, their 10 children, and frequently their 17 grandchildren.
In 1915, the property was acquired by bank president John R. McDonald, followed by the Larson and Smith families. In 1957, Gannon University’s first fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, purchased the 18-room, 5-bath white stucco home, establishing the university’s first fraternity house and earning the distinction “Gannon’s First and Finest.”
Ten years later in 1967, Thomas Gray and his wife purchased the house from Gannon after the fraternity relocated directly across the street. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 as a Queen Anne–Victorian Eclectic style residence.
