She liked the online dating profile of a cute boy across the Bay in San Francisco. Like her, he was into the outdoors and had spent time living in Latin America. He said hi, and they decided to meet up for an afternoon date in the park. During the date, he revealed that he did not, in fact, live in San Francisco, nor anywhere near her, but an hour south in Mountain View. They had matched only because he was visiting a friend in San Francisco, bringing his profile within her discriminating travel limits. But it was too late. Despite the distance, and the rather unfortunate haircut he had hastily gotten in preparation for the date, there was an undeniable spark. The Friday nights stuck in traffic during the sometimes two-hour commute between Mountain View and Oakland soon became well worth it. In redwood forests, and on riverbanks and mountain tops across Northern California, they spent the Summer of 2019 falling in love.
After months of quarantine, Juliana got a wild idea in the summer of 2020. Both she and Nathan were working from home--what was holding them to the Bay Area? In August of 2020, the couple moved out of their apartments, packed their belongings into Nathan's trusty 4x4, and headed out to explore Montana. What was originally meant to be a month living in a cabin in the woods turned into a six-month adventure across the Mountain West from Glacier National Park to Yellowstone and the Tetons, down through Colorado, Santa Fe, and Sedona. By the end of their grand adventure, both Juliana and Nathan knew that they were meant for one another. And they also had planned their next adventure--a move to Colorado. In January, on the way back up to San Francisco, where they planned to say goodbye to friends, Juliana and Nathan stopped for a day at Big Sur off Highway 1. After a day of hiking along the coast in perfect weather, they sat on a secluded ocean cliff watching the sunset. Nathan dropped to one knee and pulled out a small, wooden ring box he had carved and engraved by hand. As the setting sun lit up the sky over the breakers, Nathan asked Juliana to marry him. She said yes!
