Julia and Nico’s story began completely by chance in their university residence building. One evening, Nico found himself locked out after forgetting his keys while his brother was away. Since Julia’s roommate, Emily, was the trainer for the men’s soccer team and one of the few people Nico knew who were still on campus over Thanksgiving break, he reached out to her for help getting back inside. On her way downstairs, Emily stopped by Julia’s room and asked if she wanted to come along. Since Julia already needed to grab her laundry, she decided to join her. What started as a casual conversation between the three of them quickly turned into just Julia and Nico talking in the hallway for nearly three hours about everything and anything. Time seemed to disappear as the conversation flowed so naturally between them. Eventually, they realized it had gotten late and went their separate ways, unaware that a spark had already been ignited. A week later, Julia was on her way to Queen’s University for her team’s hockey season opener when her teammate Karen, who had recently started dating Nico’s brother, asked if she could pass along Julia’s number to Nico. Julia agreed, though she didn’t think much would come of it after days passed without hearing from him. Meanwhile, Nico had been trying to think of the perfect reason to reach out. That reason finally came when he and his brother happened to be watching Julia’s game and saw her score her very first OUA goal. After the game, Julia was surprised to receive a text from an unknown number that read, “Congrats on your first OUA goal!!” It was Nico, and from that moment on, the two have been inseparable.
