Churches

Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore (aka The Duomo) – The center of the city, and the north star of the city. You can get a ticket that will let you tour the Cathedral, the Dome, The Bell Tower (aka Giotto’s Campanile), and the Baptistery of Saint John. Climbing the dome is hard, but worth it for the views. The real highlight though is the Baptistery, which is the oldest building in Florence. Basilica di San Lorenzo Basilica di Santa Maria Novella

Museums

The Uffizi Gallery – Birth of Venus, La Primavera, and a lot of other Botticelli’s; The Annunciation by Da Vinci. The Accademia Gallery – Michelangelo’s David. That butt is a true work of art. The Bargello National Museum – Donatello’s Bronze David (a smaller David, but also a cute lil butt); Michaelangelo’s Bacchus; The Magdalene Chapel (13th-century chapel where death-row prisoners could say a final prayer, hence the fresco cycle which focuses on penitent saints). Palazzo Pitti – The Boboli Gardens (very uphill in almost every direction); The Museum of Costume and Fashion; The Palatine Chapel, etc. Ferragamo Museum – For lovers of shoes and bags.

Piazzas

Piazzale Michelangelo – Pack a lil picnic and a bottle of wine, and head up to Piazzale Michelangelo to watch the sunset on the steps. It’s a bit of a hike up, but you can see all of Florence and it’s the best. You’ll also see a copy of Michelangelo’s David and he and his butt overlooking the city. Piazza della Signoria – This is where the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Vecchio are. But the best site in the square is the Loggia dei Lanzi, which has Cellini’s Perseus With the Head of Medusa. Piazza Santo Spirito – A great place to get dinner, drink some wine and enjoy a nice, chill night. Piazza della Repubblica
