We had been talking about hiking Mt. Greylock, the tallest mountain in Massachusetts for months. Brendan booked a weekend getaway in Williamstown, a quaint town in the Berkshires. We got to the mountain with intention to hike it, only to find from the ranger that, in the middle of winter the mountain was iced over and without gear, we would be taking a very risky hike. So we went and bought micro-spikes for our boots and picked an easier trail. All the while Brendan was rehearsing his lines and I was preparing to pretend to be surprised, because Brendan's poker face is, well... crap. We get to the base of the mountain, gear up, gear Sadie up (puppy coat, paw wax for the ice, red bandana for extra cuteness), and start on the trail. We arrive at a babbling brook, and Brendan, trying to play it cool.. says “Let’s check this out” and so I thought “OK girl! This is the moment, get your game face on”. At the brook, Brendan got down on a knee, and said the most beautiful proposal, all of which I blacked out and don't remember anything except “be my wife?”... so of course I responded with an exclamatory YUP!” And he put the beautiful fair trade ring that we customized together onto my very cold hands, and we kissed, hugged, cried and hiked in happiness.
