The water in Costa Rica is safe, however, sensitive stomachs can be affected. To be on the safe side, drink bottled water and save the tap water for brushing your teeth, showering, etc.
YES, Costa Rica is a very safe country. However, petty theft is common no matter where you go in the world. Use common sense when traveling with your belongings.

When eating out, a 10% tip is commonly already added onto the final bill, as well as, the tax (13%). Here are some helpful hints: • It is recommended to add 5-8% on top of the final bill, for a total of 18%. • At small local restaurants (called “sodas” in CR) it is acceptable to round up to the next dollar and leave change as a tip. • On the rare occasion that tax and tip are not on the final bill, give between 10-18%.
