Neither Jeremy or Joanne had any sane reason to be in Kennedyville, Maryland, when they met. However, they have persistent friends who convinced them to do something "fun" - an obstacle course race. Joanne was only new at trying to run again as part of a bumpy road to recovery after a series of ankle reconstructions years ago, and Viviane Crosthwaite pounced on her cautious optimism of being able to run on a treadmill to convince her to sign up. Joe Messenger told Jeremy he would get a free beer at the end of the race, which seemed to be incentive enough. So on the 5th May 2018, they both joined team "Angry Salmon" for a Savage Race. They all set off with enthusiasm, though the differences in pace soon became evident. The team waited patiently after every obstacle as Joanne and Jeremy stumbled through each running leg of the race. The pair found a good pace with each other- slowing to walk together, then pushing the other back to running more, then joining the team for the "Salmon, Salmon, Salmon: RAGE" chant of success after the team made it through the obstacles, before returning to running again. All the while Jeremy and Joanne talked and bonded as they struggled through the race. The promised 5 miles turned into 6, which then turned into 7, and then finally after 5 hours of mud, ice, blood, sweat, and mustard packets, they finished the race! They celebrated with their free beers, then free beers from the more athletic competitors who didn't want theirs, then hosed off together in a field before returning to the vehicles to tailgate their success. Facebook friend requests were sent as the team bundled into separate vehicles for the drive home, and calls of "See you at the next one!" were made. Maybe it was because Jeremy had no intention of doing that much for a free beer again, or maybe Joanne had realized that obstacle races and ankle instability don't really mix, but when Jeremy asked Joanne "Maybe sooner?", she replied "Yeah, maybe sooner!"... ...and the rest is history.
