While Jessica attended Mount Mercy Academy and Justin attended Bishop Timon Saint Jude's high school, they both decided to join Timon's crew for their bi-annual play. Justin had recognized Jessica from previously noticing her singing in St. Martin's Church Choir, but being more reserved waited for an opportune time (like at crew) to start a conversation. They got to know each other for a couple of months while getting sets ready for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The next few months they hung out every once in awhile, but it took about 6 months before Jessica realized she was on a first date with her future husband.

Both Jessica and Justin have different opinions on when the first date truly was. Justin says it was when they went roller skating at DJ Spinners and spent the night watching Jessica struggle to stand up on wheels. Jessica says it was AFTER Justin had asked her out and they went to Francesca's for a candle lit dinner with awful food and weird music.

Justin bought an engagement ring in 2017 after casually browsing pretty jewelry with Jessica and her pointing out a ring she would LOVE to have "someday". They started grad school not long after which took up most of their time. So a few months after graduating, on August 10th 2019 Jessica had hired a photographer at the Sunflowers of Sanborn to take pictures of her sweet Basset Hound Pebbles. While standing in a field of flowers and her dogs close by, Justin asked her to get married. VERY surprised, Jessica exclaimed a few things, one of them being YES.
