Joyce & Cortez Dial Story
In 1973 on campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois Joyce and Cortez passed each other a couple times. They were teaching in The Upward Bound program. Cortez and Joyce’s connection began when Cortez was walking out of a building and Joyce was walking in. Joyce had a case of vertigo and collapsed, and Cortez caught her just before she hit the ground. Cortez took her back to her apartment, made sure she was ok, and told her to call him if she needed to go to the Doctor because she was not driving at the time. A couple of days later Joyce called Cortez and he picked her up and took her to the doctor. Cortez knew she was the one when he took Joyce to his hometown during a snowstorm around Thanksgiving. As Cortez was driving out of town he stopped by her place and asked what her plans were given the snowstorm. Cortez suggested Joyce go home with him to Chicago and meet his folks. Cortez proposed and presented the ring at a romantic dinner in DeKalb, Illinois.
