Our Love Story - Joy's POV

First came BBM, then came friendship, and after miles apart, here comes marriage!

It was 2015, and BBM was all the rage. I was 18, living my best uni life, when I got a friend request from a stranger. I accepted because I liked his name — Dan. I mean, it was 2015; strange boys were always sending BBM requests to the girlies. We immediately hit it off, and although he sometimes tries to pretend otherwise, I had him laughing hard the first few times we spoke. I was living my life, starting and ending relationships as young people do, and so was he, but somehow, we always kept in touch. It was strange how easy it was for us to talk, even after months of silence. The first time we met in person was September 20, 2016, just five days after I turned 20. We knew we had something; we just didn’t know what it was. What was meant to be a quick 15-minute meet stretched into hours. We stayed friends after that, met up once more before he left Nigeria, and talked nearly every day, until we had a little falling out in 2017. It was weird because I had decided to move on from our friendship, but less than a year later, he started flashing in my head again. I reached out, and we picked up right where we left off, as if not a single day had gone by. We stayed friends, had a quick long-distance dating phase, then broke up because it just didn’t feel right to be so far away. In 2022 though, life gave us another chance. I moved to his city on June 26, 2022, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Our bond has grown so much over the last couple of years, and I cannot imagine a day of my life without him in it — my soulmate, my lover, my best friend, my husband. Till death do us part.
