November 9th, 2012. It was a Presidential election night. Jennifer was hosting an election night party at the "No Matter What Club House" (that's what the 7 roommates called their Sober Living House). Josh interviewed for a room for rent and all the roommates (including her dog Jack) voted him in. Josh and Jen became great friends who eventually turned into a loving couple. They stayed at the N.M.W. Club House for 2 years and then ventured off to take life by the horns together. Josh, Jen and Jack have been thru tough times; surgeries and sicknesses, the deaths of beloved family members and a few trusted friends, joblessness, homelessness, vehicle-less-ness, a divorce and a bankruptcy. The triumphs far outweigh the rough times; Jen’s back surgeries turned out great, and they both found gainful and fulfilling employment. Josh got his driver’s license back after cleaning up some wreckage of his past and they are now a two car family! Jen has cleaned up her wreckage as well. Over the past two years she has lost 120 lbs. All because they have found a God of their understanding Who has blessed them with recovery from active addiction. In the words of Mr. Clarence Custer, an inspiring mentor of their's... “It just keeps Gettin' Good-er”.
The morning of my nine months of sobriety anniversary there was a gift for me on the kitchen table. It was a birthday card and an amazing silver necklace from my roommate Josh. The necklace was a pendant with both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous symbols entwined together. In the short span of less than a month Josh knew how important both fellowships were to me and how both programs were in the grueling process of saving my life. I remember taking the gift to my room, sitting on my bed in utter shock at how significantly perfect it was. I texted him saying how beautiful it was and how it was too much. I also remember our roommate Brett pointing out to me that it's meaning may signify something more to Josh than just a birthday gift for a roommate.
Jen has earned her CRM Certificate (Certified Recovery Mentor) and is now working as a Residential "Counselor" at an in-patient drug and alcohol treatment center . Josh just received a raise at the Striping Company he works for and was promoted to Foreman. The couple is both enrolled at Portland Community College. Jen is leisurely taking prerequisite classes to get ready for PCC's Drug and Alcohol Counseling Program. Josh is about to graduate. Both have figured out a way to sustain 4.0 averages. WHAT?! Jack is not just Jen's dog anymore. He quickly became their dog. He's 11 years old now and although he has a lot of grey showing up on his handsome little face, he's doing great. Still chasing squirrels when he can and still tells them every single day exactly when his meal times are. (His accuracy is scary.) ~ Josh and I are sooooo very excited to marry each other. (We were ready the moment I found the dress). We are equally excited to see all of you at our Best Day Ever! We cannot WAIT to introduce you all to each other. Love, Jen, Josh and Jack
