The Proposal

Josh's plan was to propose on our anniversary. However, when he told me he wanted to go out for dinner, I asked him to put it off. I was having my final observation for the year the next day and didn't want to stay out late or drink too much. I had no idea the wrench I had thrown into his plans. The night of our "anniversary dinner" Josh dressed up in dress pants, a dress shirt and dress shoes...which I thought was odd as he hadn't ever dressed up that much for this restaurant. He was acting odd...usually he is in the car waiting for me. This time I went to take care of the dog and Josh took his time upstairs, then made sure that I went into the garage before him. Josh says that people should tell men who are about to propose that the ring box does not fit well in your pocket! He didn't want me to see it, so he kept trying to time things so that I was never behind him. When we got to the restaurant, Sycamore Inn, he made a comment about how packed the parking lot was, then took his time getting out of the car. I need to preface the rest of this story with...we had been at the restaurant a few weeks earlier just to get out and do something normal during the pandemic. The restaurant had been at 25% capacity and there were only about 3 other occupied tables in the bar area (which is our favorite place to be). When he proposed the capacity restrictions had been lifted and every table in the bar area was in use! When we got inside, I felt like the staff was looking at us oddly. We ordered our usual appetizers, and Josh was so nervous that he stammered and said something completely wrong. Our appetizers came and it was a normal night out for us except that Josh's phone kept going off. He usually ignores it, but that night he kept looking and I remember making a comment that he was popular that night. We had been talking about Knox when Josh suddenly got out of his seat and stood in front of me telling me I needed to come closer. He lost all of his words in his nervousness as lights flashed (that I didn't even really notice) and asked me to marry him. I said yes and the restaurant broke out in applause and comments of congratulations. The lights flashing was my mom getting ready to take pictures. Josh had asked my parents to be there and take pictures. He had it all set up so that they were in the back restaurant area where I couldn't see them. They surprised him by getting into position by going through a side door Josh had completely forgotten about. The texting had been him texting my parents to make sure they were there and warning them when things would be happening. The restaurant provided us with champagne to celebrate. It is a night I will never forget!
