I sent Josh a message on Bumble. 💌 I thought he was so cute. (I remember telling my friends about the “nerdy jock.” I had "matched" with. 😂 ) We talked about our careers & our passions & our dogs (of course). I could tell how passionate he was & that stuck with me. I had just moved to Brooklyn for my dream job in the city and I was still getting settled, unsure of the direction I was headed. I let Josh’s messages go unanswered (yes.. I “ghosted” him.. I’m still so sorry babe!) A few weeks (& bad dates..) later, I was ready to delete the dating app. I scrolled through my messages one more time before hitting ✖️, but paused on my conversation with Josh. I read the last message he sent and couldn't put my phone down. I decided to reach back out. It had been a month - I wasn't expecting a response - but wanting to poke back at me for virtually standing him up, Josh answered & told me "he had moved..." For a few minutes, he left me thinking I missed my chance (..before quickly forgiving me for leaving him hanging. 😋) I had to meet him.
The flights were booked, the restaurant was rented, and the spot that would change our lives forever was chosen. I was planning to propose in Ashlee's favorite spot in Brooklyn, the Promenade. It overlooks Manhattan and truly takes your breath away (not as much as Ashlee does, obviously). Ash and I were going to walk to the promenade together for what seemed to be a lunch. Little did she know, her entire family was going to be waiting there on benches for us. Then, the world caught fire, COVID spread, and my proposal plans sadly burned up with it. For everyone's safety, we had to call it off. A few quarantine months later, some travel restrictions had been lifted, finally, an opportunity. The plans had changed to Ashlee's Father flying in, and we would recreate the plan with him, my family, and face timing everyone else. Cue Ohio being added to the banned list. Another flight cancelled, another chance thwarted. A few days later, Ash and I were watching "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," which you must see if you have not! There is a scene where the couple are relaxing in bed, and he just looks at her and asks her to marry him. Ash then says "honestly, I would take that at this point." My fiance is very subtle as you can tell. After all that had happened, would it really do the proposal justice to keep it so simple. Then I realized, we could be in the parking lot of McDonald's. It would not matter, as long as it was Ash that I was proposing too. Cue the compromise. On July 25th, I walked into the living room with my laptop, asking if Ash had been invited to this Zoom meeting with my Aunt and cousins from Florida. I set the laptop down, and Ash's face said it all. I invited our closest friends and families on the Zoom call, well over 15 of the most important people in our lives. I then asked if they would like to help me with something. Everyone then held up signs that said "will you," and now we will see you all on July 3rd. Josh and Ash 1, COVID 0!
