The Story of Us

*Disclaimer: This is written by Josh, and therefore includes a sophisticated level of sarcasm and melodrama. Please read accordingly.

Cassie and Josh are an item that goes way back. The duo met in 2007 when Cassie and Josh started going to the same school, and were part of the same cross-country team. They began to see each other more when Josh’s family started attending the same church as Cassie’s in 2009. Cassie was originally in the same friend group as Josh’s older siblings, and was routinely over hanging out at the pool during the summer. Even though she was not there to see Josh, the two began to form a friendship and enjoyed hanging out in groups. This is where the story starts to heat up. Cassie was a junior in high school when Josh was a freshman. She did not have a date to the prom, and decided to ask Josh to go as a friend. April of 2012 rolled around, they both got dressed up, and danced the night away. Now why is this an important moment in the trajectory of their relationship? It would not be until about three years after they started dating, but Josh admitted this was the day he knew he had feelings for Cassie. Flashforward to December of 2012. Cassie and Josh officially began dating. Their first date was to drive around and look at Christmas lights (romantic right?). They continued dating, and began to face their first big challenge, as Cassie’s impending departure for school cast a dark shadow on the future of their relationship. Would they make it? Would two years of waiting be too much? Against all odds (not that many odds) the relationship endured, grew, and even thrived during these years. In 2015, Josh graduated high school and was headed up to Boone, NC to attend Appalachian State University where Cassie was currently enrolled.

Part 2

The next two years proved to be some of the greatest years of their lives. They enjoyed each other’s daily company in the presence of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Through countless dates at Our Daily Bread, donuts eaten at the Local Lion, or mindless drives through the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cassie and Josh learned to love eachother better, and fell deeper into the enjoyment of the other person’s company. This time was not all cupcakes and roses, however, it presented its own challenges which forced the couple to mature and change things in their relationship. This was the first period of their relationship where they committed to putting Christ at the center of everything, a promise now irrevocable in their relationship. All good things must come to an end right? It now came time for Cassie to graduate and tackle the new challenges of life. This was a period of transition met with great uncertainty. What does life after college look like? How will things look differently when they are both in two different stages of life? Cassie moved back to Hickory and has done very well in growing her photography business. This was a time where they learned more about sacrifice in a relationship, constantly giving up what was theirs to pursue the other. Just to clarify, Cassie and I have been dating for a long time, and I will not bore you with all of the details, so let’s fast-forward to the good stuff.

Part 3

In the fall of 2018, Josh snuck back to Hickory to ask Cassie’s parents (Phil and Tammy) for permission to marry Cassie. They said yes and were gracious to gift Tammy’s mothers diamond to Josh for Cassie’s ring. After a few more clandestined trips to Hickory to get just the right ring, the stage had been set and everything was in order. On October 19th, 2018 Josh and Cassie went to Black Balsam Knob past Asheville, NC with their pup Luna. They took a windy back road up to the top of the mountain and soaked in all of the fall colors. They parked, started walking up the trail, and then emerged through the balsam trees to the wispy grass of the bald mountain top. They held hands, walked, and talked about life. When Josh found a flat spot, he led Cassie down to it, and told her how he felt about her, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and Josh proceeded to try and put the ring on the wrong hand. The couple shared tears and lifted up a prayer as Luna started barking and the wind picked up. As Cassie and Josh drove away they shared a blissful, joyful hour to themselves as they did not have cell service. On their way home, they were overwhelmed by the support and love from their family and friends as they notified them one by one of their very recent engagement. Cassie and Josh are set to get married March 30th, 2019 in Hickory, NC. They are looking forward to celebrating the momentous occasion with family and friends that have been there for them along the way. They are ecstatic to finally be able to live together after over six years of dating. They hope for a wedding day, and life thereafter where Christ is at the center of it all. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10
