For anyone who doesn’t know, 10/03/2021 was a biiiiiiiiiiig day—and not just because of the proposal. It was the last day of the regular baseball season and the Dodgers had a huge Game 162 to play. The Dodgers were only 1 game back from tying for the lead with the Giants, meaning if the Dodgers won and the Giants lost their respective games, the Dodgers would have one final chance at winning the NL West. Jake had been planning this proposal for months. Barely anyone knew except the very few people he was relying on for advice on how to make it perfect. He somehow hid texts and phone calls with Josie’s best friend and even found a way to meet with her in-person (without Josie) that wasn’t suspicious. Needless to say, it was a stressful few months for Jake. It took a lot of planning, coordination, and flexibility....and dodging security breeches that could have ruined the surprise. Back to 10/03/2021. Jake decided he wanted to celebrate the Dodgers (and end of quarter at work) by having breakfast with Josie’s family before watching the game on her father’s massive TV. Josie didn’t suspect a thing. Of course it made sense that Jake wanted to make a big deal about it. Of course it made sense that he was very persistent about making it happen even when it didn’t seem possible. Even though her dad had slipped the night before and mentioned the possibility of Jake’s siblings coming down for breakfast, Josie was oblivious. You can decide whether that’s a testament to Jake’s BSing ability, Josie’s trust, or her naivete. Even when Josie walked into her father’s backyard and saw Jake’s siblings sitting there, she still didn’t get that this was a surprise for her! She was actually so distracted by his family and trying to talk to them that she didn’t notice Jake standing behind her with a ring box…waiting. Eventually, he got her attention, she turned around, and you know the rest.
