What do you get when you mix a National Honor Fraternity, a mutual love of history, and genuine "nerdiness" over all things Harry Potter? A bond of love and "mutual weirdness" that has lasted over four and a half years and continues to thrive with ongoing discussions over Harry Potter fan theories along with the occasional toy soldier and vlog. It all started at George Mason University in early 2014 when Joe was elected as Scholarship Chair of the Zeta Delta Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi. Semrin was the Vice President of the Chapter and was required to meet on a weekly basis with all Committee Chairs. As a result, Joe had Semrin as his "captive audience" for about 30 minutes every Tuesday afternoon as they discussed the events he planned for that semester. With all of Joe's events planned, their conversations turned more into "Who is your favorite president?" And "What about Global Affairs made you choose that major?" You know...casual small talk. They started talking on a daily basis and eventually Joe decided to ask Semrin out on a date. Their first official date was dinner at the local Irish Pub and an evening watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the first movie). This then turned to a weekly tradition of getting together and watching the Harry Potter movies. It only took until the second/third Harry Potter movie (the cause of much debate) for Joe to ask Semrin to be his girlfriend. March 27th will always be a very special day for them. The rest is, as they say, history. There have been many ups and downs, including over two years of long distance while Semrin was away in London for graduate school. But last four and a half years have mostly been filled with wonderful memories of many laughs, movie nights, and trips to California, London, North Carolina, and just about any historical site in Virginia you can think of. They finally decided to make it official on July 14th, 2018 (Bastille Day) back at George Mason University, the place where it all began.
