Thanks to a glitch in housing assignments, Joseph and I were placed in the same freshmen dorm at Duke University. While we were friendly first semester, it wasn't until the spring that our friendship began to grow. By the end of sophomore year, Joseph had become one of my closest friends. As the year came to a close, I prepared to study abroad, while Joseph prepared for another semester at Duke. On the morning I was leaving campus for the year, Joseph woke up at 7:00am to meet me in the parking lot to see me off (7:00am was not an hour sophomore Joseph saw often...). I never would have guessed that Joseph waking up to say goodbye that day was just a taste of what was to come when I returned to Duke. Thanksgiving 2015, Joseph and I hopped on an unexpected Google Hangouts call. We talked for hours about life at Duke and abroad, what we were learning and what we looked forward to. When Joseph and I both got back to campus, something had changed. We spent more time together, talked about everything and somehow always found a way to be the last two left after group study sessions (read: hangouts). Then one night, as a faithful fan of the Buckets Squad (Joseph's IM basketball team), I went to watch "the team" (read: Joseph) play. His chin was bleeding from an earlier game but he said he was fine. After the game, he walked up to all of us on the sideline and asked, "So who's going to take me to the ER?" I gladly volunteered. Joseph and I spent an incredible 4 hours hanging out in the ER (our first date), more fun than any two people should have while waiting to get stitches. That night sealed the deal for both of us. Less than a week later Joseph asked me to be his girlfriend and the rest is history!
