Tyler and Joseph became friends at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. They met through Dordt football, Joseph playing and Tyler was the equipment manager. After Joseph's injuries they got more opportunity to get to know each other on the sidelines, and eventually moved in together.

Marcus was Joseph's first friend going into Dordt College. They met at Summer practices and eventually got injured at the same time. Joseph still jokes that he's the one to blame for Marcus's injury. Marcus and his family are the reason's Joseph will always cherish his time in Iowa!

Brianna is Joseph's best girl friend! Their friendship started at Dordt College, continued as he convinced her to work at Camp Paivika over the summer, and continues where she eventually fell in love and moved to California permanently to be with her now husband Matt. Joseph and Kerry attended their wedding(s) in Canada in Summer of 2017.

Joseph met Aric through his brother, Marcus Den Herder. They became close when Joseph spent holidays and weekends at the Den Herder's home in Sioux Center, IA.

Chris, aka "Wales," and Joseph became friends in the summer of 2011 when they both spent their summers as first time counselors at Camp Paivika. They were instantly brothers! They even have tattoos to prove it. Chris and Joseph are still very close even living on opposite sides of the world.
