We first met on September 19, 2021, at church in Dallas. Illona was just visiting her sister at the time, and we had a brief introduction. Nothing dramatic, just a simple hello. We became casual friends, and then life moved on. Illona returned to where she was, and we didn’t stay in touch. Almost a year later, in August 2022, we crossed paths again. This time, Illona had moved to Dallas to study at CFNI. We started seeing each other regularly at church, and slowly, our friendship began to grow again — naturally, without expectations. In March 2023, Joseph was surprised knowing that Illona had never driven a car before. Didn’t even know how to start the car! That led to some spontaneous driving lessons here and there. It was a fun, lighthearted moment between us, but it also planted the seed for something more. That summer, Joseph decided to attend CFNI as well. Illona helped him every step of the way and Illona's quiet support meant a lot. When school started in mid-August, we found ourselves spending more time together — in classes, ministry, and community. That’s also when the driving lessons became more regular, since our schedules lined up. Those moments were full of laughter, patience, and brought us even closer. Over time, our connection deepened. We started to pray for each other and care for one another in a more personal ways. In December 2023, Illona traveled back to Indonesia. We hadn’t talked about our feelings directly, but we were both quietly praying, hoping and thinking about the same thing during that time apart. When Illona returned in January, we went on a drive to Waco. Something we casually referred as a “driving practice.” But this time felt different. After the meal, sitting in the car in the parking lot, Joseph finally shared how he felt and opened up about what had been growing in his heart. He shared what he had seen developing between both of them and how meaningful her presence had become in his life. She didn’t respond right away — and he respected that. She took two weeks to reflect and pray, and then gave her answer: YES. Since then, we’ve walked through both beautiful and stretching seasons. It hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge has helped us grow in patience, in understanding, and in love. Through it all, we’ve learned that love isn’t just about grand moments, but about small, steady choices to show up, to listen, and to care. Now, as we prepare to begin this new chapter together, we look back with full hearts. From a simple introduction at church to where we are today, we see a story shaped by kindness, timing, and grace. We’re thankful for the journey, and even more excited for what’s ahead. “We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
