FAQs

Question

How do I get to Isla Mujeres?

Answer

1. Fly to Cancun: Book your flight to Cancun International Airport (CUN), the closest major airport. 2. From the airport to the ferry: Take a taxi, private shuttle, or shared van to the Puerto Juarez ferry dock, where the Ultramar Ferry terminal is located (approximately 30-40 minutes from the airport). We have included a link to CARM in our travel section that can assist you in booking both transfers from the airport and your ferry tickets. 3. Take the ferry to Isla Mujeres: Ferries run frequently and take about 15-20 minutes. Enjoy the stunning ocean views on the way! 4. After arriving on the island, you can either hop in a taxi at the taxi stand outside or walk to your hotel if it is nearby.

Question

What travel documents do I need?

Answer

You will need a VALID passport in order to fly into Mexico. Please make sure that your passport does not expire within 6 months of traveling. Since the wedding is in April 2026, please ensure your passport does not expire on or before October 2026. If you do not have a valid passport or if you need to renew your passport, please take care of that as soon as possible. Current processing time for routine applications is 4-6 weeks.

Question

Should I bring US Dollars or Pesos?

Answer

US dollars are widely accepted across the island; however, to ensure that you get the best exchange rate, we recommend paying in pesos when possible. You can typically exchange USD for pesos at your local bank. There is also an ATM directly across the street from the ferry station, as well as a cash exchange booth (there are many other ATMs throughout the island). Credit cards are commonly used, but it’s a good idea to have some pesos for small purchases or tips. Be sure to notify your bank that you are traveling to Mexico so that you don't have any issues using your debit/credit cards while in Mexico. It is also a good idea to use a credit card that does not have extra foreign transaction fees.

Question

How should we communicate on the island?

Answer

We recommend downloading WhatsApp (https://www.whatsapp.com/) for easy and free communication. WhatsApp is widely used in Mexico and allows you to make calls and send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data. It’s perfect for staying in touch with us, other guests, or local businesses during your trip. Just make sure your phone plan includes data, or use local Wi-Fi networks. You can also add an international plan to your current phone plan if you would prefer.

Question

How can I get around on the island?

Answer

Isla Mujeres is tiny! It is less than 5 miles long and only 1 mile wide at its widest point. It is very easy to get around. Taxis are easily accessible all day long, no matter where you are. You can also rent a golf cart. Isaac Cardos, our wedding planner's husband, can assist you with golf cart rentals for a great price. You can contact him through WhatsApp: +52 9988743461.

Question

Is there Wi-Fi on the island?

Answer

Yes, most hotels, restaurants, and cafes offer Wi-Fi. However, signal strength can vary, so download any important travel documents or apps in advance.

Question

Do I need to know Spanish?

Answer

While Spanish is the official language, many locals in Isla Mujeres speak English, especially in tourist areas. Learning a few basic phrases like “Hola” (Hello), “Gracias” (Thank you), and “¿Dónde está…?” (Where is…?) can go a long way!

Question

What if I forget something at home?

Answer

Located mid-island is Chedraui, a superstore that has clothing, home items, electronics, food, a pharmacy, and more. Here you can find all basic cooking necessities, American food brands, and items you may have forgotten to bring for your trip. Cancun is also only a ferry ride away if you need something from a mall or specialty store.

Question

Can I drink the water?

Answer

The short answer is no, you should only drink bottled water. The water is purified, but it is extremely hard. All hotels and restaurants will provide you with filtered water and ice. No one will serve you tap water (even if it is in a glass and not a bottle). It is safe to rinse your produce in the water, and perfectly fine to brush your teeth with the tap water. But as a general rule of thumb, only drink bottled water.

Question

Is Isla Mujeres safe?

Answer

Safety is our top priority, and Isla Mujeres is known as a peaceful and welcoming destination for visitors. Like all countries in the world, there are parts of Mexico that have problems, and there are parts of Mexico that are incredibly wonderful and safe. Isla Mujeres happens to be in one of those great places.
