Escrito por José y Anto: En la Universidad de Purdue, en un pequeño pueblo de Indiana, ambos empezábamos nuestro tercer año de Ingeniería Industrial sin conocernos. Fue nuestra amiga María Luiza Camargo quien nos presentó. Ella me conocía desde primero y había conocido a José ese verano mientras trabajaban juntos como becarios. Durante el primer semestre fuimos conociéndonos poco a poco, forjando una amistad basada en risas y compañerismo dentro de un grupo de amigos. Con el paso del curso y a medida que nos acercábamos, comenzamos a intuir que quizá podía haber algo más. Tanto José como yo, de manera independiente y sin saberlo el uno del otro, empezamos a confiar lo que iba ocurriendo y lo que sentíamos a Gonzalo Alonso. Él era el mejor amigo de José y un gran amigo mío y, el pobre, sin buscarlo, acabó metido de lleno en medio de la historia. Le tocó ejercer de agente doble y cupido, intentando no intervenir más de la cuenta, pero apoyando siempre la relación. Tras una dosis de intercesión —cuya magnitud sigue siendo debatida— por parte de Gonzalo, Malu y el resto del grupo, llegamos al 21 de enero de 2022, día de nuestra primera cita. Yo cociné pasta boloñesa y, aunque a José no le gustaban algunos ingredientes (algo que descubrí más tarde), se lo comió todo fingiendo que era el mejor plato que había probado jamás… ¡Lo que hace el amor! A partir de ahí, el tiempo voló. El 5 de marzo de 2022 oficializamos nuestra relación; ese verano vivimos nuestra primera etapa a distancia mientras trabajábamos, yo en P&G y él en Amazon; y, para el comienzo del siguiente curso, ambos ya conocíamos a los padres del otro. En mayo de 2023 nos graduamos juntos y, ese mismo junio, tras un bonito viaje por España donde conocí a su familia, nos mudamos para trabajar en una planta de P&G en Lima. Probablemente piensen que hablo de Lima, Perú, tierra natal de mi familia y de clima agradable, pero no: nos mudamos a Lima, Ohio, un pueblo perdido en el Midwest estadounidense donde en invierno se alcanzan los −20 °C y los edificios de más de dos pisos se pueden contar con una mano. Ahí aprendimos a equilibrar la vida y el trabajo, seguimos haciendo grandes amistades y creciendo juntos. En 2024 visitamos la verdadera Lima (la de Perú) un par de veces y José conoció a mi familia. Durante uno de esos viajes, y totalmente a mis espaldas, José se reunió con mis padres para pedirles su bendición para pedirme matrimonio. Ese mismo día, con mi madre como cómplice, consiguió mi talla de anillo y empezó a planear la pedida. Unos meses después, ya en 2025, ampliamos la familia adoptando a nuestro perro Bosco, un braco alemán de pelo corto que llegó a nuestras vidas como un auténtico ariete de energía para revolucionarlo todo y, al mismo tiempo, llenarnos de felicidad. Este último verano, acompañados por Gonzalo, Anna y Bosco, viajamos a las Smoky Mountains en Tennessee. Allí, culminó el plan de Jose cuando el 5 de julio, acompañados por una lluvia inesperada y un hermoso paisaje, me pidió matrimonio ¿Quieren adivinar cuál fue mi respuesta?

Written by Jose and Anto: At Purdue University, in a small town in Indiana, we both began our third year studying Industrial Engineering without knowing each other. It was our friend María Luiza Camargo who introduced us. She had known me since freshman year and met José that summer while they were interning together. During the first semester, we slowly got to know each other, forming a friendship rooted in laughter and camaraderie within a close-knit group of friends. As the year went on and we grew closer, we began to sense that there might be something more between us. Independently—and without realizing the other was doing the same—José and I started confiding what was happening and what we were feeling to Gonzalo Alonso. He was José’s best friend and a great friend of mine, and the poor guy, without meaning to, found himself right in the middle. He became a double agent and an accidental cupid, trying not to interfere too much while always cheering us on. After a certain amount of encouragement—the extent of which is still debated—from Gonzalo, Malu, and the rest of our friend group, we arrived at January 21, 2022: the day of our first date. I cooked pasta Bolognese, and even though José didn’t like some of the ingredients (something I discovered later), he ate every last bite, pretending it was the best dish he’d ever had... Oh! What love does to a man! From that moment on, time flew. On March 5, 2022, we officially became a couple. That summer, we faced long distance for the first time while working—me at P&G and him at Amazon—and by the start of the following school year, we had both met each other’s parents. In May 2023, we graduated together, and that June, after a lovely trip to Spain where I met his family, we moved to work at a P&G plant in Lima. You might think that means Lima, Peru—my family’s homeland with its pleasant, mild climate—but you’d be mistaken. We moved to Lima, Ohio, a tiny town in the American Midwest where winter temperatures drop below −5°F and buildings taller than two stories can be counted on one hand. There we learned to balance work and life, continued building friendships and growing as individuals. In 2024, we visited the real Lima (the one in Peru) a couple of times, and José met my family. During one of those trips, behind my back, José met with my parents and asked for their blessing to propose. That same day, with my mom as his accomplice, he got my ring size and began planning the proposal. A few months later, in 2025, we expanded our family by adopting Bosco, our German Shorthaired Pointer, who burst into our lives like a ball of unstoppable energy, turning everything upside down—and filling us with joy at the same time. This past Summer, along with Gonzalo, Anna, and Bosco, we traveled to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. There, José's plan came to fruition, as on July 5th, accompanied by unexpected rain and beautiful scenery, he proposed. Care to guess my answer?
