We met in the fall of 2020 during a Zoom class at the Leeds School of Business while we were both at home during the pandemic. The class was called BASE—a hands-on, group project–oriented course where we were assigned teams at the start of the semester. Jordyn almost switched out of the class because, at the time, she loved sleeping in and a 9 a.m. class twice a week felt way too early. Meanwhile, Gerens had just switched into the class at the last minute when a spot opened up. As luck would have it, we were placed in the same group and spent the semester working together. One night, Gerens bravely texted Jordyn to ask about applying to be a college RA (I promise we aren’t that lame). That simple message turned into a FaceTime call, and before we knew it, we were talking until 2 a.m.—even though we both had that early morning BASE class the next day. What started as group project meetings and study sessions quickly turned into hours of Zoom and FaceTime calls getting to know each other. After months of talking virtually, we finally met in person in January 2021. Our first date was at the Gross Reservoir in Boulder, Colorado. A few years later, Gerens moved with Jordyn to Phoenix, Arizona while she attended law school, and we began building our life together.
We celebrated our fifth year anniversary on January 22nd. Naturally, we spent our anniversary dinner indulging in In-N-Out Burger and Dutch Bros. The following weekend, the Patriots won their football game, so Gerens told Jordyn to put on her pink dress and that we would be going to dinner to celebrate our anniversary. Gerens drove to Tempe Town Lake, where he had a bucket list book of all of our memories and corresponding photographs we have shared since we moved to Phoenix, Arizona. The last page was read "getting engaged." He got down on one knee and Jordyn said yes to forever!
