Kirby started looking for a church the summer before her senior year of high school. She wanted to be able to explore and learn about her faith with others her age, as well as attend mission trips. One of her best friends Rachel Stump told her to come and check out her church, Trinity Lutheran in Kutztown. After attending the church service that morning, in the evening Kirby attended the youth group meeting where they were talking about their mission trip for the summer to New Orleans to help with clean up from hurricane Katrina. Rachel and Jordan were both signed up to go. It was too late for Kirby to sign up for the trip, however a couple weeks later Rachel told her that she could no longer attend and wanted to know if Kirby would like to take her spot. While on the trip Jordan and Kirby got to know each other. On the airplane ride back home the youth group had to be split up on the plane. Their youth leader Seth handed out the tickets randomly and no one was sitting next to each other except for Jordan and Kirby. They talked the majority of the ride home except for when Kirby fell asleep on Jordan's shoulder. They started dating a few weeks after they got home from the trip.

The morning of August 10th was really stressful for Jordan. He knew that that would be the day he would propose, but he had to keep it a secret. He knew it was going to be at Sitler's (their first date) and he let all of the parents know it was happening so they could be there to experience and see the proposal too. Kirby and Jordan had breakfast at her dad's that morning and he played it off like nothing was going to happen. Later in the day Kirby got a call from her friend Uriah about doing something and she invited him to come mini golfing with them. That worked out perfectly! Jordan quickly texted Uriah and let him know what was going to happen at the golf course. With everyone filled in about the plan Kirby and Jordan headed to Sitler's. Once there Jordan went into the pro shop where he met all the parents and let them know that he was going to propose early on in the course. He went outside and met up with Kirby, Uriah, Erica and Ziggy. On the second hole, just after Kirby got her ball in, Jordan got down on one knee. All the parents were able to get right next to the hole and watch the whole thing. After some quick pictures everyone went to Valentino's (their second stop on that first date) to celebrate and start telling the families the good news!
