Answer

If you’ve never attended a Catholic wedding before, we’re excited to share this special tradition with you! Our ceremony will be part of a Catholic Mass, which is both a wedding and a full religious service. The entire ceremony typically lasts about one hour. Here’s what to expect: The ceremony begins with the Liturgy of the Word, a series of Scripture readings that reflect the beauty and meaning of marriage. This includes a reading from the Old Testament, a Responsorial Psalm, a reading from the New Testament, and a passage from one of the four Gospels. Following the readings, the priest will give a homily, a short reflection on the Scripture and the sacredness of Christian marriage. Following the Word of God, we enter the heart of the ceremony, the Rite of Marriage, where we freely and publicly consent to enter the sacred covenant of marriage before God and the Church. We exchange vows and rings as visible signs of our commitment, and the priest offers a nuptial blessing, invoking God’s grace upon our union. The Mass continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where the Church gathers to offer thanks and participate in Holy Communion. The bread and wine are consecrated and become the Body and Blood of Christ. Catholic guests are invited to receive Communion, while those who are not Catholic or not receiving Communion are warmly invited to come forward for a blessing by crossing their arms over their chest or remain seated if they prefer.
