It began with casual chats, reactions to a film or a discussion about mental health. As the lunches became more frequent, the connection became stronger. Did co-workers suspect something when Carmen and Jonathan unknowingly nominated each other for employee awards in the same month? Perhaps, but it didn’t deter Jonathan in asking (stammering) Carmen to join him in one of his favorite activities in the world—walking. Despite being the heart of winter and Carmen being allergic to the cold, she said “yes”, and Jonathan knew there was something special about her. However, neither of them expressed their feelings. After many walks together, Carmen discovered an even stronger path to Jonathan’s heart—Batman! She invited him to watch the new Batman movie in theaters, and Jonathan agreed, despite having already seen it earlier in the week with his brother. They had a great time, and when Carmen dropped the bag of popcorn, she picked the pieces right up. Jonathan marveled at her kindness. It was a nice date and an even better movie. But was it a date? It wasn’t until Carmen built up the courage to ask Jonathan if he wanted to grab food one weekend that they had their first official date at the historical Tommy’s Tavern in Princeton. The cocktails were strong, but the chemistry was stronger. Afterward, they found themselves sharing their feelings in Jonathan’s car. Little did they know that this mall would become their favorite place to return to, watching film after film at the AMC. From Tommy’s, their dates evolved from arcades to The Museum of Natural History to a weekend trip to Philadelphia. Nowadays, Carmen and Jonathan enjoy dancing while they brush their teeth, eating salmon every other day, and debating whether to leave the cats in the room. They trust each other, they appreciate each other, and soon they will be married.
