During our many discussions about our future together, a traditional wedding celebration never felt right for us. We agonized over it for a while but ultimately decided that we would elope, and it was the best day ever! We stayed in Saranac Lake at the Hotel Saranac. It’s a beautiful hotel and they were so sweet to us when they found out what we were up to. The day before our “wedding” was the Summer Solstice, the first day of summer and the longest day of the year. It was also the day we chose to exchange our personal vows with each other on Heaven Hill in Lake Placid. Our personal vows had words meant only for each other, so we didn’t want to exchange them in front of our officiant/photographer. Plus, there was a bunch of ugly crying from both of us which would not have looked good in our photos. Then later that evening, we did a “first look” and after we picked our jaws off the floor, we steamed and packed our outfits for the next day. In the morning, we had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and our waitress asked us what our plans were for the day, and we told her that we were getting married that day! More tears were shed, and mimosas were had on the house. Then we had to get ready for our 3+ hour hike; me in full glam makeup and curlers, and Micheal in regular hiking clothes. Although our day would have gone on rain or shine, we were so glad the sun decided to come out that day. It had been raining all week and even on our way to Hurricane Mountain in Keene, NY, there were still some clouds out; but overall, it was a beautiful day for a hike. At the summit, there wasn’t a soul in sight, so we were able to change into our outfits without any trouble. Our ceremony took about 5 minutes to complete because we had already said our personal vows to each other. We just repeated after the officiant and then BAM! We were officially husband and wife! Then we had Stewart’s late-night pizza and mango-lime sparkling juice and called it a day.
