Yes, we have been legally married since August 19,2017. We had a court signing in Mamfe, Cameroon which is Bessong's hometown. We planned to do a wedding with Johanna's family in the US, but life happened and that wedding did not.
Last summer Bessong's grandma made us promise that we would do the traditional Cameroonian wedding to show that we are really married, and what Grandma says, we must do :) We are also excited to celebrate with everyone and have our families be able to get together.
In Cameroon grooms must pay a bride price to the parents of the bride to show that they are committed, serious, and able to take care of their daughter. It shows that they not only value the bride, but also value the parent's time and effort in raising their daughter. This paying of the bride price is a legally binding marriage in Cameroon.
You will have a chance to try Cameroonian food and hear a lot of Cameroonian music. There will be lots of dancing, so feel free to participate in that no matter what your skill level or experience. Or just sit back and enjoy the show. It is common for people to spray or throw money at the couple while they dance. There may be some surprise performances. Most importantly, be prepared to have fun!
