Johnathon and Devin met very briefly his first year at UMaine Orono when Devin visited her friend Nick, who lived on Fuller's hall. Sophomore year Devin transferred to UMO and started spending a little more time with Johnathon here and there. Johnathon and Devin became good friends and started spending a lot more time together junior year, when they moved into a house off campus with two other friends (CARROLL STREET FOREVER!). They started dating the following winter after a lovely all day date in Boston.

Devin had a timeline in her head for the last few years, stating she wanted to "get married by 30". Johnathon took this to heart and proposed at her all time favorite place, Higgins Beach, on her 30th birthday. He took Devin to do her favorite birthday things that morning, including getting donuts, driving through Cape Elizabeth, and taking a walk on the beach. Approaching the end of the beach and preparing to leave Johnathon stopped, tossed aside the donuts, got down on one knee, and asked a surprised Devin to spend the rest of her life with him. Johnathon surprised Devin again by secretly inviting one of his old ultimate frisbee teammates to capture the moment. Devin's first phone call was to her Maid of Honor, Allie Cain, and Devin was also surprised to find her immediate family waiting for her at her childhood home with mimosas all before 9am!
