We met just before August 21, 2017-- the day the sun went out and Chicago was cast into shadow during a total solar eclipse. Johnathan had meant to be out of town in order to view the eclipse from the ideal location (in River Grove, it was only an 91% eclipse), but since he had only recently arrived at his new job at the Cernan Earth and Space Center, it was a good move for him to stay in town and work. Katelyn was working at Rhodes Elementary School just 1 block away from the Cernan Earth and Space Center and was frustrated with the lack of any plan her school had to plan for the eclipse, which is an incredibly rare opportunity. Their paths would collide arrived in the gift shop asking if she could purchase eclipse glasses for her entire school (roughly 500 pairs)... the person working the gift shop at the time was Johnathan. Johnathan didn't typically handle gift shop affairs, but it was the end of the day and his boss, Kris, was on her way out the door. As soon as Johnathan saw Katelyn he assured Kris that he could handle it and that she would not be needed. After a brief discussion Johnathan convinced Katelyn that they could come up with a much grander scheme than simply providing glasses... Johnathan ended up visiting the school on the morning of the eclipse to explain to the younger children how to properly view the eclipse, and Katelyn organized the older kids on a field trip over to the space center in the afternoon in order to join the viewing event that the Cernan Center was hosting. The event was a huge success and everyone was happy. That same night, Johnathan texted Katelyn and asked her out. She said she was busy, but could probably find some time to get together. A cup of coffee, a meeting at the park, and a movie (and a few coded messages) later... they were a happy couple!
