Johnathan and Delaney met in the 8th grade but it wasn't until a Wildwaves field trip that they became fast friends. Johnathan and his friend confronted Delaney during lunchtime after an exhausting day of riding coasters and slides, all dripping and begging for cash. Delaney thought he was kind of cute so she treated them to fries, swearing that they owed her. By chance, Johnathan and Delaney sat across from each other on the bus ride back to school. The entire bus ride they couldn't stop talking, discussing conspiracies and dressing Johnathan up in sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, and taco keychains. That was the day "Delaney's sunglasses gang" was created and they had an attachment and inside jokes that would only grow over the summer and into the 9th grade...
Johnathan and Delaney talked all summer. More inside jokes, a few hangouts, and a couple of crushes. However, Delaney swore to her mom that she only thought of him as a friend and boys were definitely gross. Once school began, they hung out as much as possible: between classes, lunch, after school when possible. At a school football game, Johnathan seemed particularly antsy, saying he forgot something but eventually asking the big question, "Will you go to homecoming with me?" Thinking it was a joke, Delaney responded with "No" and walked away. Eventually, all was well and Johnathan confessed he forgot the flowers and sign in his locker (definitely wilting as they spoke) and Delaney agreed to go to homecoming with him. Homecoming was a spectacular night of awkward dances and photobooth props, and Johnathan and Delaney decided to end the night at Shari's diner (driven to by her mom). Around the hours of 11pm-1am (subject of debate between them regarding anniversary dates) is when Johnathan asked Delaney to be his girlfriend, and she responded ecstatically with "No," jokingly, of course. And that is how they became high school sweethearts.
6 years later, Johnathan and Delaney visited Maui on vacation. One day, after an incredible session of surfing (Johnathan had several wipeouts and Delaney did amazing and even surfed with a turtle), they decided to drive 3 hours to the Haleakala volcano. Johnathan was already considering his proposal options (after a failed attempt of a sunrise beach proposal, because she was too tired to get up). At the top of Haleakala, Johnathan went for an inconspicuous photoshoot with the sunset in the background and choked on his words until the few words of "Will you marry me?" came out. Delaney, finally realizing this wasn't a joke, said "Yes". During the long drive back, they excitedly began discussing wedding plans (she fell asleep 26 minutes later while he drove in silence). And we have been excited to celebrate with friends and family ever since!
