The Highlands, once known as the Traditions Course when it opened and among Golf Digest’s list of best courses in 1997, was designed by Kurt Sandness, president of SKAMP Golf Design, North Carolina, and Minnesota. The mission was “to create an aesthetically appealing, playable and strategically challenging golf course amidst the beauty of Mother Nature.” Under the new ownership of Keith Hiett, the course once again The Tradition has never looked better. The well-bunkered lush, finely manicured greens, and rolling fairways testify to the TLC that takes place on a daily basis.
The first Russell Lands On Lake Martin commercial area has been designed to reflect the agrarian era when Lake Martin was created. All structures have been designed in period architecture typically found in rural southern towns in the 1920s. Connected by sidewalks to promote "walkability" of the town, building sites provide stunning views of the surrounding meadows, forest and Lake Martin in the background. The entrance into Crossroads and street crossings are cobblestone with granite curbs, which are common to the entire development. Timbers produced from specimen pines harvested from company properties and cut at its saw mill operation are prominent in all four major buildings. When complete, the overall design of Russell Crossroads will reflect the natural progression of a town that would have evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Getting back to nature. Residents and visitors alike come to Russell Lands On Lake Martin to experience the beauty and recreational opportunities the community offers—whether on the water or off. To address this desire, Russell Lands opened the Adventure Center at Russell Crossroads. Located in an authentic, rustic cabin next to the Town Green, visitors and Russell Lands On Lake Martin residents can book guided or self-guided tours with our very own Naturalist to explore the area's flora, fauna and native wildlife, rent canoes or kayaks, rent bikes for a Russell Forest trail ride, or meet with a Russell Lands adventure outfitter to plan a host of family activities such as guided horseback rides on the trails or geocaching. With such plentiful and diverse options now added to the existing boating, shopping and dining opportunities at Russell Lands On Lake Martin, everyone can now answer the question, "Where will the day take you?" in their own unique way.
Surrounded by acres of rolling pastures, The Stables at Russell Crossroads is a working two-story equestrian center housing quarter horses to Clydesdales—sometimes, goats too. Guided trail rides are available from your hosts, Stanley and Linda. The Stables is also a favorite venue for rustic weddings at Russell Lands On Lake Martin.
Part preserve, part playground. Russell Lands has set aside several thousand acres of property throughout its property at Lake Martin as a working forest known as the Russell Forest. Russell Forest will ensure that future generations of Lake Martin residents and visitors may personally experience the woodlands along with the flora and fauna supported by it. The Russell Forest also ensures that development will proceed in a manner harmonious with nature. It provides spectacular hiking, biking & equestrian recreation and serves as a center stage for our certified Naturalist. Maintenance of the Russell Forest as a working forest will continue to provide filtration of our part of the watershed and keep Lake Martin as one of America’s cleanest lakes.
