We met while both serving in the Navy as part of VFA-211. Immediately we knew we had chemistry. After a week of glances and nonchalant conversations, John finally made the first move. For the next year, we were inseparable. Then as life always does, our plans changed. Sammie was discharged from the Navy and went back to Illinois to pursue college while John went on his final deployment and then returned home to Georgia. And so our story ended faster than either of us anticipated.
Though John called Sammie 4 years after our first story ended, Sammie could never have fathomed John’s intent was to rekindle our relationship. In 2022, after taking to an old mutual Navy friend, Sammie friend requested John out of the blue, to which he responded with an audible laugh and an “I’ll deal with this tomorrow”. The next day we talked for hours. It was clear our friendship was still intact and we spoke like there had never been any time passed. For the weeks following, we went down memory lane, caught each other up on what we had both missed out on good, bad and the ugly and quickly realized our feelings for each other were still there. With Sammie living in Arizona at the time, a decision had to be made on who would move in order for our story to officially restart. After a few back and forth decisions, Sammie put her house up for sale and began the process of moving. 6 months after the first conversation, Sammie, Lex and Flint were official residents of the Peach State and our love story became a reality once again.
Though there had been numerous conversations about getting married, ultimately it was Sammie who asked. After celebrating her birthday weekend, Sammie got down on one knee, with a ring and stumbled very nervously through a proposal. John, being his usual self, stopped Sammie part way through and agreed under the condition he asked her Dad for his blessing first. After a few days, once our guests left, John called Sammie’s dad and asked for his permission. And now as they say, the rest is history.
