Sand Dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park
This park has the largest natural living sand dune on the East Coast. Two self-guided trails and nature programs available year-round. Hang gliding, kite flying, hiking, visitor's center, small gift shop, museum, picnic facilities and restrooms. A visitor center with museum is attached to a 360-foot boardwalk with exhibits explain the dune’s ecology and are a gradual entry to the massive dune field with no entry fees. Shoes and sun protection are recommended.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Note: interior access not currently available due to construction.
Buxton Woods Trail
1¾-mile long, self-guided, loop trail leads through towering pine trees, thick sandy ridges, small ponds and marshes, and local island wildlife.
Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
A local museum honoring the thousands of shipwrecks off North Carolina’s coasts.
Wright Brothers National Memorial
On December 17 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first successful aeroplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Today, the 60ft high granite Wright Brothers National Memorial towers over the town of Kitty Hawk in the same location as the historic first flight.
