How We Met

From a garlic knot to tying the knot.

We met on the sideline of an ultimate frisbee field in the spring of 2014 when we literally bumped into each other. We were teammates for that season on a league team, but outside of a handful of after-game meals as a team, we did not spend too much time together. (Ask John what he thought about Cate's menu selection of "Nacho Mountain.") A couple months later, we had both independently volunteered to coach ultimate as a part of a City of Atlanta summer program. We overlapped on coaching sessions a couple of times, and when the third instance of co-coaching was upon us, we decided to carpool to the fields together. The plan was to meet at Tech Square before going to camp for the morning. When we returned to Tech after a successful session, Cate asked John if he'd like to get lunch at Ray's Pizza. We sat at the bar, ordered, and chatted. The famished duo commiserated over the amount of time it was taking for food to arrive. John eyed the lunch buffet from which we did not order, and tried to convince Cate, the fervent rule-follower, to go up to the buffet bar and snag a garlic knot for them to share. Maybe it was hunger-induced delirium, or maybe it was the fact that she thought he was cute, but after some bickering and internal turmoil, Cate snatched up a garlic knot. We've been mostly behaving ever since.
