They have known each other for a couple of years due to attending Journey Church together. Craig began spending time with Johanna’s son, Robert, as a positive male figure and helping Johanna with getting Robert where he needed to be when she was unable to. This is what helped to begin their close friendship. By December, Craig had decided it was time to ask Johanna on a date. The only issue is that she had not fully picked up on any of his flirtations up to this point and did not know that he was asking her on a date, thinking they were just two friends hanging out. During the dinner, they had amazing conversation and even discussed their views on relationships such as the importance of being equally yolked in their faith and why Johanna had never been in a relationship before (her son came through adoption, not a previous relationship). During this conversation, Craig stated that it sounded like she had built up a brick wall and anytime someone approached, she would let them get a little close but would then throw bricks at them to keep them away, using a Home Alone analogy. She agreed that the analogy worked pretty well in explaining what the dating world was like for her. Craig could see that Johanna was completely clueless that he was trying to get his foot in the door with her. By the end of the date, Craig dropped her off at her home and made a statement that finally caught Johanna’s attention. Bringing back the previous analogy, he walked away stating, “when you are ready to stop throwing bricks, will you please let me know?” At this point, Johanna finally realized he was wanting to pursue a dating relationship with her. However, Craig was worried she still didn’t get it and decided to go ahead and send her a message after he left stating he really liked her to which she simply responded, “I know,” with a smiley emoji. From there, they began to see each other more and more with many more dates to follow.
