OUR STORY

Joey sits at the coffee room table, scratching his head. He looks at his recent text message from Carly. Late summer of 2011. Carly is by the pool. Thinking about Le Moyne soccer preseason training camp. She heads up to the deck where she placed her phone. Joey looks at his phone, another double take. He’s been chatting and hanging out with Carly through mutual friends and he really likes her. Carly can’t find her phone. She knows she placed it on the deck table as she went in the pool. Curious, she walks over to her cousin, who happens to have Carly's phone in her hand, typing away to Joey. “Olivia! What did you say!?” as she snaps her phone back, albeit smiling. Carly thought, still with a smile, “what is he going to say back to this?” Joey ponders his response. Nervous sweat starts. “I like you too! Talk in person?” That seems like a decent response...Carly looks at Olivia, then her text messages. Olivia sent to Joey, “Do you like me?” She is shocked but definitely eager to see what Joey will say back. Carly hopes he knows that this isn’t her... She’s got an idea! Carly starts typing… “OMG! That was my little cousin I am so sorry! LOL!” Joey sends the text, feeling courageous. He does like Carly a lot and he thinks she is really cool and extremely pretty. “Oh….my…god..” As he reads the text Carly sends instantaneously. I was pranked, he concludes, and feels even more sweat drenched all over. More texts back and forth, but the damage is done. Irreversible. Next time Joey and Carly meet, Carly immediately has that same smile she had by her pool, and begins laughing. Seems like that summer night in 2011 was a kick start to laughs and awkward but great moments they will share for years to come. They haven’t lost that simple, but amazing connection to not take themselves too seriously. Maybe all the credit was due to Olivia? Family and friends are so important to Carly and Joey, and we are excited to share this special celebration with everyone!

The Proposal

The plan was set in motion. “I have my June schedule laid out, and I have these weekends off, can we make sure we do something fun, on the weekend of the 15th?” Carly’s pointing to her WellNow Urgent Care work schedule. In my mind, she was putting this surprise right on a tee. “Yes sure, how about a day trip up to Old Forge? Lunch and a hike? Then we can head back and see what people are doing in Syracuse?" “Perfect! Great idea Joey, you are literally the best.” I’m paraphrasing from memory…close enough. My hands begin to insta-sweat. “Where do you want to go?” Carly asked, now excited to think about spots, trails, mountains, restaurants. “Lets head up to Inlet, maybe the Woods Inn? We can eat on the dock then hike a mountain or do a trail?” There was no plan for a hike, and we were off. I had the ring Peg and Caden helped me pick out in my left side pocket, maybe checking that it was still there two hundred times as we head up to the Woods Inn. The ride up was great, I remember us listening to loud rock music. Carly to this day will tell me, “you didn’t even seem nervous, I usually can tell by your sweaty hands.” I was laser focused. We arrive to Inlet, NY, town next to Old Forge, and make our way into the Woods Inn. At this point nothing could stop the pounding in my chest. We get out of the car and make our way down to the dock. Meanwhile I am awkwardly looking for a person, A: to take our order and B: for someone to take my phone for pictures. We find a girl taking lunch orders by the dock. “So, this is where we order?” I asked.“Yes, order here and I can bring your food out to the dock.” I glance over to the dock and point, “do you mind taking a picture of us on the dock?” Carly is puzzled. She looks back and still remembers thinking “I was so confused, I thought you knew that girl or something?” The girl says “yes, sure.” I respond saying under my tongue and with slight grin, “start taking a lot of them…” PS. She said yes!
