Caitlin doesn’t remember it but we actually met during our first week of college. She probably forgot because I’m generally forgettable. I did not forget because she’s generally unforgettable, and I acquired her phone number that night but never texted her. Because why would she want anything to do with me? This made it awkward 4 years later when we met in a more meaningful way and I had to pretend to ask her for her number, which I already had. Our story is only possible thanks to one person. Amanda Rosso and I worked together at UW-Madison. Amanda and Caitlin were sorority sisters in Pi Beta Phi, until Caitlin quit the sorority. I think that might mean they’re no longer sisters? But definitely friends. They’re still allowed to be friends. Caitlin likes to say she stole me from Amanda because in our last month of college, Amanda invited me to go to the Pi Beta Phi spring formal together as friends. As friends. So there wasn’t much “stealing” to be done, and I resent the idea that I’m an object to be owned. Anyway, Caitlin snuck into her old sorority’s formal where she fell victim to my impressive dance moves and a few hilarious jokes. We exchanged phone numbers for real this time and spent as much time together as possible for the better part of the next 2 months. Then she moved to Austin, Texas, for her first big girl job. This left our relationship at a crossroads. As I told my dad during that time, we were in uncharted waters. I was committed to a year of work and medical school applications in Madison while my new favorite person in the world moved across the country. My dad gave some truly life-changing advice: in life, we can only really follow what we’re feeling. At the time, I was so broke I had to ask for an advance on my Christmas money to purchase a flight to visit Cait. To her surprise, I kept visiting.
