Courtney contacted Joel's Dad because her class was doing a project on the U.S. Military. In this project she wanted her class of students to write and correspond with actually U.S. Military members. Courtney had remembered that Joel was active duty in the U.S. Airforce and just happened to be deployed in Iraq. During this time Courtney and Joel began talking as friends ..... obviously it grew from there!
