The first tourist attraction we visited in Northumberland as a couple. Cragside House, Gardens and Woodland is a truly unique visitor attraction in the heart of Northumberland. Situated near Rothbury, it was the family home of Lord Armstrong, Victorian inventor and industrialist.
Our favourite spot to grab an ice cream on a summer's day. All Morwick's ice cream is made on the farm using their fresh award-winning milk from their herd of Holstein, Ayrshire and Jersey cows. Their ice cream is made in small batches, using the same equipment you would find in the best Gelaterias in Italy
Dubbed the Windsor of the North, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years. In recent years it has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, featuring as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey and previously appearing as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.
On this group of islands off Northumberland's coast in The North Sea, birds rule the roost, seals laze on rocks, and dolphins skim the surrounding waters. Regular boat trips run from Seahouses harbour between March - October for a day trip filled with wonderful wildlife.
Sugar Sands is a secluded beach between Boulmer and Howick. It’s a good walk to get there, but is well-worth the steps you put in. Alternatively, you can drive down to the dunes via Longhoughton along a path through Low Stead Farm (there’s an honesty box for the parking fee at the gate here).
Our absolute favourite place to eat. If you love home cooked food, seafood and more specifically lobster, this is the place to visit. Once seated in the conservatory, you can enjoy beautiful views of Boulmer beach. The seafood platter is a firm favourite of ours but be warned the portions are hefty so come with an appetite.
Set by Craster Harbour, The Jolly Fisherman stands a mile and a half from Dunstanburgh Castle and is considered an ideal hotspot, after completing the coastal walk from the castle. The Jolly Fisherman is best known in the local area for it's famous Crab Sandwiches, Crab Soup and North Shields Dressed Crab Salad. Reservations are highly recommended as this is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
