Getting messy while digging into a bucket of Maryland blue crabs covered in old bay seasoning is a quintessential Baltimore activity. There are many great places to go, The Choptank is just one of the restaurants we like that's near the recommended hotel.
Hampden is a cute neighborhood near where Tamas grew up, with lots of shops, restaurants, and breweries, centered on 36th St. or "The Avenue". Nearby is the Jones Falls River, with a few spots pretty enough that you forget it's under a highway. Some favorites: Blue Pit BBQ, Chuck's Trading Post (great brunch, can get busy), Grano's Pasta Bar, Dylan's Oyster Bar, Artifact Coffee, The Bluebird (creative cocktails and bites), Nepenthe (local homebrew shop turned brewery, with good food too) For a more upscale meal, Woodberry Kitchen and La Cuchara are nearby.
Check out the Peabody Library, Washington Monument, or the beloved Brewer's Art, a brewpub that has been serving their Belgian beers and rosemary fries since 1996.
Just a few blocks east of the Inner Harbor, Fell's Point is one of Baltimore's most historic neighborhoods. During the day it is a very cute place to wander around and check out some of the boutiques, coffee shops, and art galleries - the Sacre Sucre pastry shop is a local favorite. At night, there is no shortage of pubs including the last place Edgar Allen Poe was seen before his death: The Horse You Came In On Saloon.
Tour the USS Constellation or the Torsk submarine, visit the Maryland Science Center (or nearby Port Discovery) for kids activities, or hop on the water taxi for a self-guided harbor tour. Stop by Miss Shirley's Cafe for breakfast or brunch.
It's on the pricey side, but it's a huge aquarium with plenty to see and do, definitely worth a visit.
The AVAM is Tamas and Jocelyn's favorite Baltimore museum. It is a small museum that only exhibits artwork by artists that have never been formally trained which leads to a very unique and eclectic collection. Don’t miss the fart display in the basement!
Wander around the Homewood campus (not the same as the medical campus) and visit the free Baltimore Museum of Art, grab a bite in the nearby student town of Charles Village.
Interesting museum in an old cannery with lots of exhibits about the history of various industries in Baltimore.
Tour this historic fort that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner during the Battle of Baltimore, or just take in the scenic views of the harbor while wandering through the park.
