Joce is from a small suburb outside of New York—New Canaan, Connecticut. Todd is from a small country town—Kamas, Utah.
Our roommates set us up. Todd's roommate, Mikey (who was dating Joce's roommate), was adamant that Todd should meet this "cute redhead." Todd had never dated a redhead. He was always into ethnic girls. He came to realize that being a redhead is one of the most rare and beautiful ethnicities. We met for the first time at a barbecue at Joce's house. Though we were next to the fire, sparks didn't necessarily fly, but there was something different. We went on our first date shortly after—a Nationals baseball game. Joce kept talking about how she wanted to change the rules of baseball. Todd tried to convince her that baseball is fine as it is. We still argue about baseball.
Nothing. Kidding, we both love to play. We love to be outside. Anything from hiking, boating, kayaking, tubing, to fishing and lots and lots of neighborhood walks (Joce helps Todd get his steps in). We love to play tennis together, and basketball (except we're a little hesitant after Todd broke Joce's hand last time we played). We hammock, we read, we eat froyo. We like to cook together—Joce especially loves to open "The Lab" to try new recipes. Food from The Lab often ends up in the garbage, but every once in a while Joce nails it. We also love to travel, and can't wait for COVID to go away so we can spend more time abroad.
Our first date was in April of 2019. Since then, we've had a lot of good times. Some bad times too, but that's life. We went jet skiing while Todd was passing kidney stones. Joce broke her hand on her birthday playing basketball with Todd. Todd's had two hip surgeries (Joce has basically become a nurse since we started dating, as Todd is kind of accident prone). We've been to the famous Cameron Indoor Stadium to watch Duke play (Go Dukieees). We've taken several trips to Thousand Islands in upstate New York. We've hiked in Harper's Ferry in West Virginia (Take me home, country road). We like to explore, but we can also be home bodies and are content watching Friends, Schitt's Creek, documentaries, college football (for Todd), and really all sports (for Todd).
Todd proposed at Tapp Field in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Tapp Field is a major battlefield from the civil war, named after Catherine Tapp. Todd checked his family tree, and there is no direct relation unfortunately, but the Field still had his last name so whatever. We walked into the green field and Todd dropped to one knee. Joce said, "is this some kind of sick joke???" In Joce's defense, she wasn't expecting this at all, so she was a little shocked. Todd assured her it wasn't a joke, and told her we've been through some battles together and he wanted to keep battling through life with her. He asked if she'd be a Tapp. She agreed◡̈
We're getting married in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Jordan River Temple in South Jordan, Utah. We considered doing a civil ceremony in Utah so that more family and friends could attend, but the more we looked into it, the more we realized it would be too complicated (thanks to COVID). We are getting married in the temple because that's a special place where we are able to be "sealed" or married for eternity, not just for time. We like each other enough that we decided we want our marriage to last beyond this life. We're grateful for temples, and that God has provided a way for special family relationships to last forever.
We hope so! Since Joce has a lot of close friends and family in Connecticut, we hope to have an informal reception-like party there in the spring or summer of 2021. And since we both have friends and family in Utah, we hope to have a reception in Utah. We thought about doing receptions closer to our wedding day, but due to COVID, we decided to postpone the celebrations until hopefully masks and social distancing aren't so commonplace. If/when we nail down dates for the receptions, we will send an invitation!
Who knows? Life is funny and we look forward to a wild ride together. Joce works for a member of Congress and Todd works for the federal government, so we plan to stay in the D.C. area for the foreseeable future and perhaps beyond. We want to travel and experience the world. We have been very blessed and hope to give back through meaningful service, especially through our church. We like looking at real estate, and hope to buy a home soon. We look forward to having a family someday, including a German Shepard (for Joce) and a Bengal cat (for Todd).
