How It All Started

She almost slept through the first date

Joanne and Ian first met in 2008 through their mutual friend, Simon. Initially, neither person paid much attention to the other; Ian was just another one of Simon's nerdy engineering friends, and Joanne was just another one of Simon's friends from summer school. They didn't interact much until Joanne was recruited to Ian's summer Ultimate team with the expectation that she could "just stand in the end zone" and catch the disc without much running. They got to know each other through playing Ultimate. Then in 2011, Joanne needed help studying for the Physics section of the MCAT. Who better to ask than an engineer? They started spending more time together, and it became the turning point in their relationship. One day, Ian asked Joanne if she wanted to have dinner together on Valentine's Day. Joanne gave a casual 'sure' and the date was set. Valentine's Day was a busy Tuesday for both Joanne and Ian, filled with classes and extracurricular activities. The dinner was booked for 8:30PM, after Ian's club meeting. Joanne was feeling exhausted after pulling a classic all-nighter to study for that day's mid-term exam, so she decided to take a quick nap before dinner. Ian arrived outside Joanne's house at 8:15PM, eager for the big night. He sent Joanne a text to say he had arrived, but got no response. Then he called, but no one picked up. Tried again, still nothing. Did he read the signals wrong? Was the chemistry he felt just his own imagination? After waiting for 40 minutes, broken-hearted, he decided it was time to call it a night and go home. All of a sudden his phone rings. "Oh I'm so sorry!! I slept through my alarms! I'm coming!!". They went out, enjoyed their dinner, and the rest was history.
