How We Met

On January 1, 2015...

A dear friend of Joanna's and a dear brother of Evan's invited some friends over to watch college football at the Clough household on New Year's Day 2015. Upon arriving to the Clough house Evan opened the door, and Joanna seriously lost her train of thought because in front of her was the cutest darn boy she had ever seen. Unbeknownst to one another, they both thought “she/he is way out of my league.” The night carried on with Joanna and Evan watching each other and trying to act natural. Joanna left that night and Evan inquired with his brother Ryan about this mysterious girl. The next day Joanna was invited over to watch a movie at the Clough's. Joanna got to meet John (no, she never got them confused!). Before the movie started, they took a trip to Harris Teeter and Evan bought Joanna mint chocolate chip ice cream (her favorite). He knew the way to her heart from the very beginning, and the rest is history!

The Proposal

Oval Beach near Saugatuck, Michigan on October 19, 2019...

Joanna spent a month living in Grand Rapids, Michigan in July of 2019 for one of her many Ob/Gyn rotations. Joanna loved the hospital and city so much that when she was asked to interview with the program in October she asked Evan to join her for a long weekend, so that she could show him the area. Evan obliged, and they planned for a fun weekend exploring Grand Rapids. In the early morning of their first day in Grand Rapids, Evan dropped Joanna off at the University of Michigan Health hospital for her interview. He then went in search for a good cup of coffee. Several hours later Evan picked Joanna up from her interview and they spent the day exploring Grand Rapids (also known as “Beer City, USA”), sampling three of Joanna’s favorite breweries. At the end of the day Joanna suggested they go back to the AirBnB to freshen up before meeting some friends for dinner. Evan said that they wouldn’t be going back to the Airbnb. It turns out, while Joanna was in her interview, Evan had run back to the AirBnB and packed up all their things. That evening Evan whisked Joanna off to a secret location - a beautiful resort on Lake Michigan, near the small town of Saugatuck. On the morning of October 19 they had a lovely breakfast, went for a long hike, and took a bike ride from the resort to nearby Oval Beach. It was at that beach on Lake Michigan that Evan asked her to marry him. Joanna was very flustered and continuously asked Evan if he was sure! He was (thank goodness!) so Joanna asked him if he would marry her right back!
