How We Met

I met Jim in my very first class freshman year of college. It was Sociology 101, and thankfully I wasn’t doing too great because Jim’s friend group offered to study with me for the first test. Jim was the funniest and most disruptive one in the group. He’s naturally very smart, so he could be so distracting in the study session and then ace the test. It was very frustrating, but also I knew I immediately wanted to be friends with him. For a long time, that’s all we were—just good friends. I never ever thought of him anymore than that (sorry Jimbo). Second semester of our freshman year, Jim left for bootcamp with the National Guard, and boy oh boy was he missed! First semester sophomore year was arguably one of the best seasons of my life. Jim Hueber was back and starting to develop feelings for this girl!! Pretty oblivious to all of this, I continued to just live my life on campus, saying hi in passing, but shout out to JP: he was the ultimate wingman, always orchestrating hangs which ultimately stirred up my interest in Jim. On October 23rd, Jim performed a sneak attack and asked me to meet him outside my dorm because he had a question for me. I had a feeling it was a date since we had been seeing each other a lot more, but I wasn’t sure. I got into his car and this is how the conversation went: “What’s up? Why did you ask me to meet you?” “I’m taking you on a date right now.” “What? A friendship date or a date date?” “A date date.” From that, we drove straight to Pittsburgh to walk around Mount Washington for hours. It was incredible. Seriously so much fun. At the end of the night he made it clear that he meant business—and I mean business, like he called my dad to ask to date me. Who does that anymore?—which would probably freak out a lot of 19 year olds, but not me. I felt so much peace in that moment. We quickly became best friends and now we are getting marrrrrrried, whaaaat!!! HOW COOL.

Proposal

September 15, 2018

On September 15th, 2018, I was very nervous which isn’t great considering I typically get nauseas in big moments like this. I was thrilled to find that I was feeling totally fine during the hour-long car ride to Pittsburgh with Grace for “a date.” Frankly, I was being electric and was giving away no clues that I was about to ask her to be my wife. At one point during the car ride, Grace reached across me into the compartment in my car that was holding the ring and yells, “ooh, what’s in here?!” “JUST PENS!” I shouted back at her as I slammed the little door with my leg. This was an extremely close call. Grace is really good at ruining surprises.. that sneak. Then we finally arrived at Mount Washington, overlooking Pittsburgh—a fun place for us because we walked around this part of town for hours on our first date. As I parked, I thought to myself, “Wow, I can’t believe I am not nauseas at all.” The moment I stepped out of the car my stomach felt like it had been tied in knots by a small group of boy scouts. The situation reached the point where I knew I was going to vomit. I explained this to Grace and proceeded to find a patch of grass that was suitable for my needs. Grace then realized that I was nervous puking—which I do more than I’d like to admit. Her response was to excitedly text her friends saying that I was going to propose. Finally, we arrived to the point where I would propose. It was a lot more crowded than I expected. Why is this? Because the beloved Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, had recently died and someone had set up a shrine for him right next to my well thought out proposal set up (letters from over the years of dating, roses, and little string lights). After a little while enough space opened for me to tell Grace that I loved her and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. By the Grace of God, she said yes.
