Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to change our wedding plans. We celebrated our original date, May 30, 2020, and were legally wed (via Zoom!) on June 30, 2020! Though it wasn't as planned, we cannot be more grateful that we were able to get married! We have ultimately decided to forgo a traditional wedding reception and have canceled the May 2021 party, as we feel it is not worth the safety risk for our loved ones to travel and gather. Thank you all for your love and support during this challenging time. We hope you are staying safe, and that we can celebrate with you in the future!
We met at Tulane University in the Dance Department. In our senior year, we were cast in a duet for the school's Dance Company. Through this process of creating, collaborating, learning, and finding physical and emotional trust in one another, our relationship began.
One weekend in early March 2019, Jessie and Jake decided to go to a fancy local restaurant for a nice dinner. He did not ask her then. The next morning, they went to a nice brunch. He did not ask her then. After a faked illness to stop by the apartment, the two went for a long walk through Prospect Park. Jake wondered aloud, "Do you know where the boathouse is?" After getting lost and not finding the boathouse, Jake did not ask, and they traveled home. There, sitting at home wondering what to cook for dinner, Jake finally revealed what he carried in his pocket the whole weekend - the most beautiful ring! Jessie accepted the proposal excitedly, and the two celebrated with a bottle of champagne and a home-cooked dinner.
In pre-pandemic times, we planned to get married on May 30, 2020. When the shutdowns began, we knew we would have to change our plans. Though a 100+ person party may not happen for a long time, we were still set on being married in 2020. In Spring 2020, New York City began offering online marriage license meetings while all city buildings remained closed. Appointments filled up for almost 3 months out within 24 hours of opening, so we went for the earliest appointment available...3 weeks after our original date. We still celebrated May 30th, but we decided our future anniversary would became June 30th, a month delayed. June 30th, it turned out, was a Tuesday - a CLASSIC day of the week for a wedding, no? We traveled out to Jessie's parent's house on Long Island, where cases were lower and there was a backyard. After Jessie worked a half-day, her mother picked up some flowers from Costco, and her dad found the old digital camera. Our officiant had been quarantining in Connecticut, but legally needed to be in NYS to officiate, and therefore needed to drive across the border to her friend's house for the afternoon. With Jake's close family and our officiant on a Zoom call, and Jessie's parents nearby on the porch, we held our virtual ceremony, complete with a digital signing of the license. Jessie's vows were interrupted when a mother deer ran through and stopped in the yard - that's a sign of good luck, right? - but we did it! After the ceremony, we quickly changed back to sweatpant-chic attire and ordered pizzas for dinner. Though it was not what we envisioned, we were so grateful to our family and our officiant for making the ceremony possible, and are were so happy to be married!
