Grace at Ace

From hardware aisles to altar, a love story written by grace. “He makes all things new.” – Revelation 21:5

Mark didn’t expect his life to change the day he walked into Ace Hardware at Alameda Station. He just needed a job and a way to keep moving forward. What he found instead was Jessica—standing at the register with a warm, steady smile that would leave a permanent mark on his heart. He asked her how to apply, unsure of himself, unsure if he even belonged anywhere anymore. Without hesitation, Jessica handed him an application and said, “You can put me down as a reference,” then smiled as they said "Goodbye". That smile—it wrecked him in the best way. She didn’t know him. Not the mistakes he had made, not the path he was on, not the weight he carried. But in that moment, something cracked open. A tiny bit of light. Mark turned in the application and later sat down for an interview with the manager, Julie. She listened—really listened—as he told her the truth: about his past, his sobriety, and his need for a new beginning. Julie looked at him, smiled, and said simply, “You belong here. We’re like the Island of Misfit Toys around here.” During this time, a better job offer came through. Mark accepted and waited for approval from his case manager. That approval never came through. Two weeks later, Mark called. The other job had fallen through—fate, or maybe something greater, had closed that door. “If the offer still stands,” he said, “I’d like the chance to prove myself.” That's when Julie told him, "Mark when you left here I prayed for you, for your journey, and I prayed that you would come back to us here at Ace. Mark got the job, and for the next year, he and Jessica worked side by side—stocking shelves, helping customers, and slowly discovering how much their stories had in common. Both had stumbled. Both had been redeemed. Both had found God’s grace at their lowest and were learning to live in the light of that mercy. Somewhere between plumbing and paint, love took root. Jessica wasn’t alone—she had a fiery little boy named Kylo. And when Mark met him, something inside shifted again. He didn’t just fall in love with Jessica—he became a father to Kylo. By the time Kylo turned two, they were a family of three. Imperfect. Whole. Redeemed. They thought their story had reached its fullness. Then, in 2023, came the miracle of Baby Grace—soft and wide-eyed, her arrival wrapped in hope and the gentle laughter of answered prayer. Their home filled with new sounds, more love, and a reminder that God’s story is never done being written. Now, Mark and Jessica are getting married—joining hands and hearts in the presence of God, surrounded by the friends and family and the grace that brought them here.
