We matched on the dating app Bumble on a Friday in October. Maggie started off strong with a cheesy Halloween joke. "Why did the ghost go to the bars for Halloween?" (for the boooos) We chatted back and forth a little over the next couple of days. Fast forward five days later, Maggie organizes an outing with some friends to a trivia night at a brewery. Unknown to everyone at the time, it just so happened that one of the friends going not only works with Jess at the same school, but was co-teachers with Jess in the same classroom for four years. She innocently invites Jess to join trivia night, unbeknownst to everyone that Jess and Maggie have met online. When everyone arrives Jess immediately recognizes that the shirt Maggie is wearing is in one of her Bumble pictures and proceeds to gaslight herself that there is no way this person could be the same person she has been talking to for the past few days. (Everyone was wearing masks since these were earlier Covid days making it harder to be certain.) However, Maggie recognizes Jess right away, tells the others who confirm it to Jess, and thus proceeds one of the most awkward evenings of both Jess and Maggie's lives. Being too embarrassed to acknowledge the elephant in the room, we both went along with trivia night barely speaking to one another directly. (We know, yikes) Fortunately Maggie sent a message to Jess immediately upon leaving trivia that night asking her on an official date and the rest is history.
